Understand the policy before judging the illustration.
Indexed universal life, or IUL, is permanent life insurance with a death benefit and potential cash value. Interest crediting can reference an external index through a policy formula. You do not own the index or its underlying investments through the policy.
Understanding IUL means understanding both its potential uses and the commitments that come with it.
What an IUL is and what it is not
What an IUL is
A long-term life insurance contract that may develop cash value. Its usefulness depends on the protection need, policy design, sustainable funding, and ongoing management.
What it is not
A brokerage account, direct index investment, or replacement for readily available emergency reserves. A crediting floor does not eliminate policy charges or guarantee that cash value cannot decline.
What an illustration tells you
It shows a design under stated assumptions and identifies guaranteed values. Non-guaranteed projections are scenarios, not promises of future results.
Seven lessons
What job would this policy serve in my life?
Keep that question in view. Features and projections become more meaningful when you know the purpose they are meant to support.
